Moving in
Establishing residency
Once you live here, you have 60 days to get a New Hampshire license and to register the vehicles you use here. You can register to vote at the clerk’s office, or at the polls on election day. There is no minimum number of days you must have lived in town first.
License and plates
Start at the town or city clerk for the cars, and at the DMV for the license. Bring proof you live at the new address. The first 60 days list is the order of operations: clerk, plates, license, voter checklist, dog license, dump sticker.
Registering to vote is one of the acts the DMV treats as evidence that you live here. Do it on purpose, not by accident, if you are still closing out the old state.
Voting
The general election is November 3, 2026. You can register at your polling place that day if you are a U.S. citizen, 18 by election day, and a resident of that town or ward. Bring proof of identity, age, citizenship, and where you live. The clerk can register you earlier. Deadlines before election day vary by town, so call.
Every town and city ward also votes that day on a school property-tax question. The question limits school-tax growth to inflation plus new construction for two years, and it caps school-administrative-unit central-office spending, if three-fifths of the voters in the district say yes. See House & Senate for who is on the ballot.
The state you left
If you lived in Massachusetts for part of the year, Massachusetts taxes income from that part of the year, and it taxes wages for work performed there after you move. File the Massachusetts part-year or nonresident return. New Hampshire will not tax the wage.
Change your address with the Postal Service so mail follows you. That forward does not move your license, your voter registration, or your taxes. Register here, and take yourself off the old state’s voter list so you are not on two rolls.
A resident hunting license
A resident hunting or fishing license requires a New Hampshire driver’s license or a New Hampshire non-driver photo ID. Fish and Game uses the same test: that ID, and you do not claim residence in another state. You buy at the nonresident price until the New Hampshire ID is in your hand. The first hunting license in New Hampshire has to be bought in person, with a hunter-education certificate or an older license of the same type.
