Work
Jobs and the commute
Most of the jobs are in the Manchester–Nashua corridor. A lot of families live in a smaller town and drive in. Manchester is the place to work, not a reason to buy in the city.
Where the jobs are
In May 2026 the Manchester–Nashua area had about 203,500 nonfarm jobs. Education and health care was the largest piece, about 38,900. Trade, transportation, and utilities was about 34,600. Professional and business services was about 29,000. Manufacturing was about 24,400. Government was about 22,200. Leisure and hospitality was about 20,700. Finance was about 12,100. Those are preliminary Bureau of Labor Statistics counts for the metro area, not a list of who is hiring this week.
The May unemployment rate for that same area was 2.9 percent. Statewide, the typical drive to work is 26.7 minutes.
Living outside the city
The map will show a rough drive from a town to Manchester, with no traffic. It is not a promise about I-93 at 7:30 in the morning, and it is not from your driveway.
I-93 and Route 3 are the roads that keep going south into Massachusetts. The map’s minutes stop at Manchester. If the job is in Boston, drive it yourself before you buy.
If the job is in Massachusetts
New Hampshire does not tax your wages. Massachusetts does tax wages for work performed in Massachusetts, even when you live on this side of the line. You report those wages on Massachusetts Form 1-NR/PY. If part of the year you still lived in Massachusetts, that part-year income is Massachusetts income too.
Compare taxes is a household estimate of a New Hampshire resident’s wages, property tax, sales tax, and gains. It does not subtract a Massachusetts work tax. If you will cross the border for a paycheck, price the job after that tax, not before it.
A job that is not in an office
A paycheck that does not depend on a Manchester office is how some families make a western or northern town work. There is no single official count on this page of how many New Hampshire jobs are remote. Ask the employer where the work is performed. That answer is also what decides whether Massachusetts can tax the wage.
