Low tax, county government
Why people look at Tennessee
People look here because the state has no wage income tax. The Hall tax on interest and dividends was repealed for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021. There is a general sales tax (state 7%, food 4%, local up to 2.75%). Counties run most local government — not New Hampshire town meeting.
The honest local bill is property tax. Rates are set by the county, and by a city or special school district if you live inside one. The map uses the 2025 Comptroller county rate: dollars per $100 of assessed value, as published. That is not a full-value / equalized rate. City and SSD rates are extra and are not painted on the county shade.
Permitless carry of a handgun has been the law since July 1, 2021 for people who may lawfully possess one (Tenn. Code Ann. § 39-17-1307). The Department of Safety still issues optional handgun carry permits. Read the official page, not a slogan.
Jobs cluster around Nashville — that is the arrival / jobs pin, not a buy-in-the-city target. Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Memphis are their own labor markets. Read the county, not the brochure.
Public data for people weighing a move. Not official any party. Not a campaign. Not advice.
